Joined to see how everyone likes their FZ8. I'm looking to get my 2nd bike, I commute to work about a 30-45 min ride. I can take the highway or I can take a few twisties and stretch of straight road. I also like to ride on the weekend whether its around town or out in the country. I have a CBR 250 right now and it's not that it isn't enough power. The main thing is it doesn't suit my needs. Obviously I have seen other bikes but the FZ8 is my number one choice right now and also being the 2nd cheapest in the 3 different bikes I am looking at. I'm looking at a 2007 SV650 with 4k miles, a 2012 ninja 650 with 1k miles and 2011 Fz8 with 5k miles. I also wanted to know if $4950 is a good price for the Fz8 with that mileage. Obviously it varies by location but I'm in the NC Raleigh/durham area. Please help and tell me why you chose the FZ8

fz8 is the best bike of all those you listed. Most power and most fun..both of the other bikes run 160 tires..fz8 runs a 180...even if it seems too much at first, you will grow into it

Welcome, you'll find that msot of us love our bike here for our own different reasons. My fz8 was my first bike and I had no problem controlling the power. It's very smooth and controllable under about 7k, and plenty fun beyond that making it a great commuter / weekend carver. I put close to 300 miles a week on mine commuting on the highway and fooling around on the weekends, don't have a single complaint. Plus, it's an fz8 and there are probably very few around you. It's pretty cool to own a bike that not many others do.
I wouldn't worry about the 5k miles on the fz8, as long as it wasn't thrashed that bike is barely broken in. 4500 - 5000 would be a reasonable price for it, maybe a bit less depending on how strong/weak the market is by you. Here in NJ I regularly see 8's in the 5k range and everything is expensive here

I moved from a CBR250R to an FZ8 after 3 months. FZ8 is great all-arounder. I commute, hit twisties in the moutains, and plan on doing some 3-5 day touring on mine. Also, of all your choices the FZ8 is the only inline 4. Love the sound and feel of this engine.

Welcome! I've never ridden an SV but like the look. I have taken a couple spins on the Ninja 650, it was comfortable and would probably make a good commuter but it just didn't excite me like the 8 does. My last bike was a 2008 Suzuki GSX650F and that was a good bike, comfy, smooth, good gas mileage, etc... Very sensible bike, kind of like a Toyota Camry. It bored me after a short time and I traded it for the FZ8 and I haven't been bored since! Been on the FZ almost three years now and love it more than ever. Even when I can't ride I find myself in the garage just looking at it.

Your right..I watched my buddy on a sv650 go head on with a 2000 Chevy 2500..because he was hitting twists on a 160 tire like he was on a 180. He will never walk the same again.

Can't go wrong with the 8. Welcome from Raleigh.

Your right..I watched my buddy on a sv650 go head on with a 2000 Chevy 2500..because he was hitting twists on a 160 tire like he was on a 180. He will never walk the same again. I get it. Not knocking your buddies bad fortune. GP bikes, Superbikes and Supersports through the 90s ran 160 / 170 rears and 110 or 120 fronts and pulled race speeds while managing traction. The key is the right combination and appropriate wheel / tire match. You could shoehorn a 170 or maybe a 180 on a SV but the tire profile will be wonky due to the pinch effect. I get that tires have gotten larger contact patches and wheels have gotten wider as horsepower and suspension has in improved. Wheel diameters have gone from 18" to 16" to 17" all trying to find the magic match...But riders often try to out perform their skill level and equipment...mostly their skill level. A properly set up SV can walk away from an 8. Not trying to start a battle...just saying. I wouldnt blame the tire size..someone is supposed to be at the throttle. Enjoy. He was riding like a jackass. I feel ya. He was also coming off an older gsxr 750 that had a wider tire, then tried to keep up with r1's on a twisty road that drops off hundreds of feet. back to bike talk..the fz8 gives you room to grow (power wise)..the others, may feel inadequate pretty quick IMO.

Well I'm a little biased but I would say the fz8 for sure! Plus how are you going to be part of the best online forum without having ever owned one!
I can't comment on the ninja 650, but I went with a friend who got an 06 or 07 sv650 about a year ago. I rode it home for him through wind and rain for 5 hours which was terrible. The bike was comfortable though.
The sv650 is a lot like the fz8 in that they can still be fun to ride at low rpm and have plenty of torque in the low rpm range. The difference is that the fz8 has the HP to pull harder for longer than the 650 in the higher rpms too. You may find that ud grow out of the sv but might not grow out of the fz8.
Id shoot to get the fz8 down to like 4.5k or even less. And I can tell you my buddy will admit my fz8 is way sexier and badass than his 650.

Welcome, Tough choices, I love my 8, I had to do the same thing 3 years ago and it did not take long to pick the 8 over my other choices. I have no regrets. Great seating position, plenty of power, not something you see on the road everyday.

My next bike is going to be a Ninja 300. Going to ride the shit out of it and hang with the bigger bikes.
