Hello Everyone. I am a newer rider, about 2 years and 12k miles or so. Started on a DRZ400 then got my 2011 FZ8 in November of 2014. Got her for a steal as a leftover and it had never even had a tank of gas. It has been a great bike so far and no real issues. She's taken me from Ohio to northern Florida which was a blast to say the least. I've done a quite a few mods, but I still have a list that I'm sure will get longer after looking on the forum!

Welcome! Midwest crew grows by one. You paint or plasti dip it white? Looks great. What mods have you done? Thanks! It's plasti dip. She looks good from a distance, but there are quite a few imperfections. But for a $60 paint job I can't complain too much. One of my favorites is the hand print in the side of the tank. I am actually looking to paint it professionally. My uncle offered to help, so I am looking at Bianco Fuji Pearl white. It is a really sweet looking color, but I have a pretty good feeling it is going to cost more than I am willing to pay anytime soon for the paint. I've just done some of the basics, Danmoto carbon exhaust, beat out the cat, K&N air filter, power commander fc (custom map), block off plates, plasti dip, Renthal Streetfighter bars, grips, Yoshimura fender eliminator, ebay bar end mirrors (just need to put on), frame sliders, ebay shorty levers, Michelin 2CTs. Probably forgetting something, but that is the majority. I would really like to do some suspension upgrades, but only being 18 and starting college soon leaves me limited on that lol.

Nice list of mods. Used r1 shock and a satan adapter can be a reasonable suspension mod that makes a big improvement.
At 18 I'm thinking you're the youngest on the forum. I could see being 18 and starting college limiting your funds, but if you think that's bad get married lol!

Could you give me a rough estimate on how much that set up would cost? There isn't much of a bike scene around here, so would the best place of getting the shock be from Ebay? I have heard good things about it, but haven't heard much about the price lol. Also I like to take long rides, so how much comfort is lost in doing the mod? I have ridden my step brothers 2005 (or thereabout) cbr1000 repsol and even on the highway it was pretty rough. Given I have a feeling it has some problems and the guy that owned it before weighed a lot more than me, but it was uncomfortably stiff.

Has a lot of imperfections, so I am looking at properly painting it. However, as long as you are not right up on it, you don't see the uglies lol.

Given I have a feeling it has some problems and the guy that owned it before weighed a lot more than me, but it was uncomfortably stiff. Well to start with how much do you weigh? Most bikes come sprung from the factory for riders in the 165 to 185 weight range. If you are in that range then you should be able to set the preload and compression damping to a comfortable setting. There are several discussions on this in the How to's and Mods sections. Finding the shock should be easy, the Satan adapter could be a little more difficult. If you are not going to be tracking the bike and want to step up real cheap then find an FZ1 Gen2 rear shock. They can be had for around $60 and bolt right in. I did this and it made a difference you can feel with out making the ride harsh. You can also get the same generation cartridges from the forks and they drop right in. This will give you an adjustable front end. Join this site and keep an eye on there for sale section. I did and it paid off. www.yamahafz1oa.com/

The adapter cost me 90 shipped. Shocks can be found on ebay for around 45 bucks shipped.
It made the rear end feel more comfortable and stiffer., but not uncomfortable.

I believe the guy that owned it before my step brother was around 250, so that may have been a factor. I was actually going to ask about the forks, so thanks for including that. I think I've just added a few things to my list haha!

That isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Is there a specific range of years the r1 shock needs to come from? Also, where can I get the adapter from? Does satan still make them or do I need to keep an eye out on the for sale section?

Maybe one of the other members has better contact info on him.

Just went ahead and purchased one about 10 minutes ago. Spent $70 on it which is more than I wanted, but it claims to come off a bike with 8,900 miles. Which I know could be a complete lie, but I figure its better than nothing lol. Really just hoping it's good at this point. I think I will just get it done and see what it feels like and decide what to do with the spring later. I think I saw a post about where someone did the mod and just didn't get the adapter. Do you know what problems would arise from this? I imagine it is pretty important, but if I don't have to spend the extra it would be nice if you know what I mean lol. My dealer where I bought it has been big into motorcross and uses race tech suspension on all of their bikes. I know the owner pretty well as we have bought three bikes from him. I will be talking to him soon about having my suspension done by race tech and see if he can get me a deal on everything. To be honest, I am just waiting to hear what my dad has to say about all of this haha! He doesn't quite like it when I do modifications to my bike. Also, do I still need to buy the bolt and nut off of partzilla or should the one in the top of it work?

You should not need any additional bolts/nuts, but you will need the adapter. The r1 shock is shorter than the fz8 and fz1 shocks. The adapter makes up for that space.

If I remember correctly the original bolt/nut attaches the adaptor and the new bolt attaches the shock to the adaptor.
