Hey guys, I just picked up my first bike, a 2013 FZ8. Very pumped! It's bone stock, 1,400 babied miles. I've been looking online for mods. I bought the vance & hines cs one blackout exhaust and the motodynamic fender eliminator kit. other than bar end mirrors, what mods do you guys recommend?
I live in Hoboken, NJ

Welcome to the cobwebs of the net, been a little slow here this summer. Dgray has a lot of good points. To smooth out the powerband and get some good bang for the bucks, add an ECU flash to the list. A lot of guys like the R6 throttle tube upgrade. Gut the Cat.

Welcome and congrats on the new bike! So many mods...for power/performance I'd suggest turbojoe flashed ecu with kn filter and gutted cat or headers. As Kansas mentioned the r6 throttle tube is nice for a shorter turn of the wrist and surprisingly smooths out the throttle.
Comfort I'd suggest a dirt road Eddie seat or similar.
Suspension my experience is lacking but the r1 rear shock made my bike feel a lot better.
Little things like ss brake lines go a long way.

Welcome aboard! Show us some pics of your new baby. The available mods are endless but like the other guys said ~ skills, suspension (stock shock is shit! R1 mod is good bang for the buck), ECU flash, throttle tube and better seat. Read Keith Code's "Twist of The Wrist 2" if you haven't already. ~ A Twist of the Wrist Vol. 2: The Basics of High-Performance Motorcycle Riding www.amazon.com/dp/0965045021/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ps2MxbQVCMMB7

Wow thanks for the welcome and the info! I'll put up a couple pics this weekend. Sounds like I really need to look into an ECU flash and R1 shock. Dennis, I'll keep an eye out for that reading list and Dan, I have not read Twist of the Wrist 2 so I'll pick that up. Do you recommend the MSF Basic Rider Course? I've ridden a street bike a handful of times and rode dirtbikes growing up, but have never owned or consistently ridden a street bike. Would doing the intermediate course be more beneficial?

Welcome aboard! I am the only one with a 2013 FZ8 that simply upgraded my stock suspension with race tech springs front and rear. Combined with Pirelli Angel GT it's like a dream machine, very good set up feedback and feel. I highly recommend springs upgrade as a cheap option to do front and rear. Otherwise fork cartridges and a rear shock are the way to go in my opinion. $500 total for springs and oil all around though, just saying.

Fellow nj guy here, welcome.
Mod wise, frame sliders. Do it yesterday. You will be super thankful when you slow mo drop it doing a u turn. If you don't drop it, even better. Some cosmetic stuff is fun, led signals, levers, gel grips, seat cowl, etc.
Beyond that, I would spend my money on gear instead of performance upgrades, at least as a newbie. Good gear is worth every dollar. Anyone who has gone done in gear will attest to that.

My wife has taken both the basic and intermediate courses in NJ. The intermediate is just a rehash of the basic on your own bike. I'd recommend that over the basic course if you have experience. You miss some of the awareness and safety stuff, but it covers the same drills on the course.

I'll check out those books Dennis. Thanks. CXA - thanks for the tip on MSF. From looking at the description of BRC, it did look a little too basic.

It assumes you have never even seen a motorcycle before. It's very slow paced, and spends a lot of time on basic controls. Clutch, shifting, brakes, etc. Then they do basic drills. Weaving, hard braking, u turns, etc. The brc 2 is a faster paced version of the drills on your bike, all done in one day. It is still quite basic, so don't expect to learn a bunch of new stuff. The best way to look at it as a day of reinforcing good habits, or getting rid of bad ones before setting off on the streets
